The blade of knives usually fall into three classes namely fixed blade, folding blade, and sliding blade. A fixed blade knife or sometimes called sheath knife does not fold or slide but is usually stronger due to the tang, extension of the blade into the handle, and the absence of moving parts.
A folding knife connects the blade through the handle through a pivot allowing the blade to fold into the handle. To prevent injury to the user, folding knives usually have a locking mechanism. Another prominent feature of folding knives is the opening mechanism. Most pocket knives and Swiss Army knives usually utilize the nail kick, while modern folding knives use a stud, hole, disk, or flipper located on the blade, which allows the user to open the knife with one hand. With the wave feature, a part of the blade protrudes outward to castch on one's pocket as it is drawn.
Sliding knives can be opened by sliding the knife blade out to the front of the handle. One method of opening is when the blade exits out the front of the handle point first and then locked into place. Another form is an O-T-F (out-the-front) switchblade, which only requires pushing a button or spring to cause the blade to slide out of the handle and lock into place. To retract the blade back to the handle, a release lever or button is pressed.

Where Did Custom Knives Come From?
Custom knives were first fashioned out of stone. Their close resemblance to modern knives showed that types which are familiar to us were copied from stone predecessors. Following the period when flint and other suitable stone materials were used, knives made of bronze then iron and later steel emerged as knowledge developed. Corrosion has taken a huge toll on most of the ancient metal knives.
Substantial evidence showed that the knife was not regarded primarily as an eating utensil until the Middle Ages. Without a doubt, they were used to cut meat or foods, prior to serving them, but they were not part of an individual's eating equipment. When they were finally began to be used that way, the knife that was used as a weapon was also used for eating purposes being carried at the belt. Persons who were not entitled to carry arms carried the knife in a scabbard fastened to the belt as a eating utensil. This was around the 15th century but there were few specimens dating earlier than the 16th century.
Most of the 15th century knives, carried at the belt, contained one set of large hunting knife and two small knives which closely resemble the kitchen paring knife, which all fit into one scabbard. As the knife became more designed for the table, the need for the hunting sets slowly disappeared with the development of city life. Eventually, the scabbard only contained a single knife and a spoon and eventually-- a knife, fork, and spoon.
It was only after knives became thoroughly identified with the table that they began to appear in silver. At that late stage of the knife's development, it was possible to make the first silver knives in very convenient form. They practically duplicated the steel knives. Very often the blade was made of steel and the handle only of silver. Today, the knife is usually made with a hollow handle-- that is two separate hollowed-out sterling silver blanks soldered together to form a handle which can be held firmly and gracefully in the hand. Since the 1920s, the blade is made of stainless steel which represents the hardness of steel and the quality of being stain resistant.
