In the United States, New York was the first to require license plates in 1901. However, it was Massachusetts that became the first state to issue a government-issued plate. Before that, motorists made their own printed license plates.

The size of bulk licensed plates vary depending on the state you are living. So if you are relocating to another state, new holes would have to be drilled into your bumper to conform to the required size. However, in 1957, the size of custom license plates became standardized when automobile manufacturers reached an agreement with governments and international standard organizations. Currently, there are three basic standards of personalized license plates worldwide. Recently, vanity license plates became quite popular not only in the United States but also elsewhere. Custom License Plates

Custom license plates are required for every vehicle for the purpose of identifying the motor vehicle. Under the law, car owners would need to register their motor vehicle upon buying them or up to at least 21 days after purchase. The license plate gives the vehicle a unique identification within the state's database. They can either be metal or plastic and has a numeric or alphanumeric code attached to the vehicle. License plates are required to be placed to both the front and back of the vehicle, except a motorcycle where the plate is attached to the back. Plates contribute other information regarding the registered vehicle to the national database such as the vehicle type, model, color, year of manufacture, engine size, purchase cost and date, motive power and mileage recorded during the road test, chassis number, and the name and address of registered owner.

US laws require that every vehicle on the road must have a license plate whether a commercial vehicle, motorcycle or even golf carts. Laws on logo license plates vary depending on the state where you are in. Each have their own design, layout, or state slogan. Some states require bulk license plates at the front and the back others require only one at the back. A vehicle owner who sells their car must remove the license plates from the car. It is now the job of the new owner to register with the Division of Motor Vehicles.

License plates usually contain symbols, colors, or slogans, depending on the issuing jurisdiction. License plate is often used in statutes but rather tags is the more informal term. In vehicle registration, tags are issued yearly and it is not the entire license plate that is replaced.

Different Kinds of License Plates

In the United States, there are different types of license plates issued and here they are:

Plates for various vehicles and groups. These are license plates issued to special passengers, non-passengers, or non-private vehicles such as amateur radios, antique vehicles, medical doctor, commercial vehicle, to name just a few.

Vanity and specialty plates. For an additional fee, motorists can have the option to have vanity or prestige plates. They have a custom serial (letter and/or numbers). They should not, however, contain profane or obscene messages.Among the 50 states, Virginia has the highest concentration of vanity plates.

Professional and Government Plates. These are issued to members of certain professions that need some kind of privileges, such as parking or going behind police lines. This may include press, doctors, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and others.

.General license plates. These are special plates issued to automobile dealers, auto repair shops, farms, and construction contractors, not tied to any particular vehicle.

Diplomatic license plates. These are issued to accredited diplomats of the US Department of State. This serves as an exception to the rule in the US that plates are state-issued.

History and Trivia about License Plates

License plates have been in existence longer than there have been automobiles. The passage of the Paris Police Ordinance paved the way for France to become the first country to introduce license plates. Germany followed in 1896. In 1898, The Netherlands became the first country to introduce a national license plate called "driving permit." The first licenses were plates with a number, beginning at 1. By August 1899, it was already at 168. When the Dutch government decided to change the method of numbering plates on January 15, 1906, the last plate issued was number 2001.

In the United States, where every state issues plates, New York has required plates since 1903. It had black numerals on a white background. When plates were first required in 1901, only the initials of the owner was clearly visible. Initially, it was not the government that issued plates in most jurisdictions and motorists were the ones who made their own plates. Massachusetts was the first state to issue plates in 1903. With the passing of the 1903 Motor Car Act, UK plates were first required in 1904.

Trivia

The earliest plates were made of porcelain baked onto iron or ceramic without any backing making them fragile and impractical. Later on, experimental materials included cardboard, leather, plastic. Come War time, copper and pressed soybeans were tried.

Earlier plates had various shapes and sizes depending on the jurisdiction. So if one moves to a new location, new holes would be drilled into the support to pave the way for the new plate. However, in 1957, license plates were standardized when car manufacturers agreed with governments and international standard organizations. For this reason, there are now two standard sizes of license plates. The US standard measures 6" x 12" while the Euro standard is much shorter at 4.5" x 20.5".

The raw materials used to make license plates include the following: aluminum, preprinted and colored reflective and adhesive sheeting and paint. The aluminum blanks are usually precut according to the size by metal manufacturers and then passed on to correctional institutions or other plate makers.

The decals for annual registration renewals, county designations, or other uses are manufactured using specialty printers on reflective sheetings similar to the ones used to cover the license plates themselves. Properties such as colors and reflective coatings are continuously up for improvement to support law enforcement. The design of license plates is a matter of creativity on the part of the car owner.
