Where Did Safari Hats Come From?
Africa is known for having a rich collection of wildlife sceneries that everyone could only dream of. A visit to this continent would never be complete without viewing this spectacular scenery. As such, we do not want to spoil the adventure and ensure that we have all the essential things we need. Aside from the clothes, shoes, and more. But more importantly, we need some protection from the sun. And custom safari hats can deliver just that.
From the early days of exploration up to the 20th century, there was only one safari essential for travelers: the pith helmet. From 19th century explorer Henry Morton Stanley to Edward VIII, they traveled the safari wearinga pith helmet.
These types of hats were made from pith or cork and covered in fabric and was believed to be the necessary shield for Westerners braving the unrelenting rays of the equator. The British Army got rid of the pith helmet in 1948 in its standard-issue uniforms but the picture of a safari-goer wearing these hats continued and were revived every couple of years.
Pith helmets were widely worn during World War I by the British, Belgian, French, and German colonial troops. Similar helmets (without the pith construction) were worn as late as World War II by Japanese, European, and American soliders in hot climates. During the 1930s, the local soldiers maintained in the Philippines wore sun helmets. It was also worn by the Bureau of Constabulary and guerilla troops.
The popularity of the pith helmet was so high that even civilians from the West wore it as a headgear in the tropics and subtropics from the mid-19th century. The Royal Marines still wore white "Wolseley pattern" helmets of a similat general design as the old pith helmet as part of their number 1 or dress uniform. This was in 1912. It was made from natural cork covered in white cloth on the outside and green shade on the inside.
In the U.S. Marine Corp, pith helmet were used as a form of identification by rifle range coaches as is the campaign hat worn by rifle range instructors and drill instructors.
Today, safari hats are much more cooler, easier to pack, and have broader rims for additional sun protection. Yes, a pith helmet may look dapper but a tomato-red sunburn on your shoulders is definitely not.
