Where Did Custom Shot Glasses Come From?
The term "shot glass" was first used during the 1940s when it was first used in the New York Times. But while it marked the first use of the word, these glasses were already extensively being used throughout most American towns throughout the 1930s. In earlier times, the container used to measure or drink a typical amount of liquor was known as the Jigger or Pony.br>
There are many stories surrounding the origin of the shot glass. According to one of the origins, a small glass would be left on dinner tables in early America wherein guests could place the lead shot or buckshot that may still be in their meals and that this is where the shot glass got its name. Another origin holds that Friedrich Otto Schott, the co-founder of the glassworks factory Jenaer Glaswerk Schott & Genossen invented the glass. But upon reaching America, it was "Americanized" using shot glass instead of Schott glass.
Other origins of the shot glass tells the story of the original shot glass being used to hold quill pens. Legends has it that the original shot glass was invented more than 100 years ago and was a small, thick walled glass usually found on writing desks, filled with lead shots. When the feather writing quill is not being used, it would be positioned upright in the lead filled shot glass.
Another popular origin story of the custom shot glass is that it traced its roots from the Western saloons of the American Old West. According to the story, the cowboys of the Old West would trade a cartridge for a small amount of alcohol. Another story is that fraternal organizations such as the Freemasons had a practice of drinking toasts from specially shaped glasses known as cannons or firing glasses, which are slammed on the table making a sound like a gunshot. The firing glass eventually become a shot glass. The former is much older than the latter and has a very specific shape with relatively thin sides and a thick protruding base.
