A federal holiday that falls on the first Monday of September, Labor Day originated in 1882 from the idea of the Central Labor Union to allow a day off for the "working man."

Since it was first celebrated on September 5, 1882, Labor Day has been characterized with parades, the first of which was organized by the Knights of Labor in New York City. After the second parade in 1884, it was proposed that Labor Day be observed annually, but most labor associations—mostly left-leaning—favored a May 1 holiday, which is celebrated in most countries today. However, President Grover Cleveland feared this may strengthen the socialist movement and quickly acted in support of the Knights of Labor.

These days, Labor Day in the US has fewer of the political demonstrations that characterized its earlier observance. Instead the holiday is seen simply as a day off, and perhaps it is because employees all over America are only happier to have a day to themselves.

As Labor Day coincides with the symbolic end of summer (which symbolically begins on Memorial Day) and, generally, the start of classes, most families take it as the last chance to take a vacation. Aside from travel, other family-centered activities typical of Labor Day are picnics, barbecues, campings, fireworks displays, and other public events. Labor Day also signals the start of football season, with the NCAA College Football games starting the weekend after the holiday, and the National Football League play-offs opening on the first Thursday after.
