National Colors of America

Flag Day

National Flag Day, which falls on June 14, commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States by the Second Continental Congress. It was established officially in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson and enacted by Congress in August 1949.

Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, although it remains at the president's discretion whether to proclaim observance of it. Pennsylvania, however, has celebrated the occasion as a state holiday since 1937.

Many towns and cities commemorate Flag Day with parades or a ceremonial raising of Old Glory. Troy, New York, holds the largest Flag Day parade each year. Framingham, Massachusetts, also observes the occasion.

The week on which June 14 falls is considered the National Flag Week. During this period, the president may urge American citizens to fly the American flag and display it on all government buildings.

A nonprofit organization, the National Flag Day Foundation, makes a lot of effort to observe this special occasion with an annual observance on the second Sunday of June. Members of this group hold a ceremonial raising of the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, sing the National Anthem ("The Star-Spangled Banner"), and join the parade.

Companies, schools, or shops may want to incorporate the observation of the National Flag Day by displaying a flag on its grounds or putting up mini versions in its interiors.

Entities who want to take Flag Day a step further may want to promote their brand or tie up their events with the occasion by giving out promotional products imprinted with the flag's design.

Among the suitable giveaways you can hand out to customers, students, teachers, employees, or pedestrians are mousepads, writing instruments, beach balls, notepads, and stress balls that come in shapes of the Capitol or a bald eagle.

Whatever promotional products you decide to use for your Flag Day-related campaign, bear in mind that more than the idea of promoting your brand, the occasion is meant to celebrate and take pride in the symbol of our homeland.
