National Teacher Day

National Teacher Day

If we look back to our childhood, the most memorable figures in our lives, aside from parents, are teachers.

Considered as second parents, teachers are instruments in helping students discover their talents and capabilities and harnessing their potential. You must have heard stories of ingenues being encouraged by keen advisers, who serve as guides throughout the long road to discovery.

National Teacher Day, which is celebrated on the Tuesday of the first full week of May, is one day in a year that we can show appreciation for public and private school teachers who work hard to provide quality education to children across the country.

While it is unclear how National Teacher Day came about, it is known that in 1944, Arkansas teacher Mattye Whyte Woodridge wrote to politicians and education leaders about the need to honor teachers. Among the recipients of those letters was Eleanor Roosevelt, who persuaded the 81st Congress to declare a National Teacher Day in 1953.

In 1980, through the efforts of the National Education Association and its Kansas and Indiana affiliates, Congress declared March 7 as National Teacher Day for that year only.

Until 1985, National Teacher Day was celebrated on the first Tuesday of March, and then the National PTA declared the first full week of May a Teacher Appreciation Week. It was then that the Tuesday of that week was voted by the assembly to be National Teacher Day.

There are many ways to show appreciation for educators on National Teacher Day. Among the standard gifts are promotional cookies, chocolates, and candies accompanied by personalized greeting cards and flowers.

Office and desktop accessories such as custom photo frames, notepad holders, journals, and Parker pens also make memorable gifts to the important people in our school lives.

While teachers are certain to welcome these tokens of appreciation, they'd be happiest to see that the lessons they imparted in their years of teaching have been applied for good and the children they had big hopes for long ago turned out citizens the country can be proud of.
