World Environment Day

Established by the United Nations in 1972, World Environment Day is hosted each year by a different city and observed throughout the week of June 5.

This year's celebration of World Environment Day, with a slogan “CO2, Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy,” is hosted by New Zealand. In the US, the Chicago Botanic Garden will play host. The whole-day World Environment Day party includes activities for the entire family focusing on food, shelter, energy, education, transportation, and public awareness.

You can show your support for World Environment Day by integrating eco-friendly practices in the workplace.

One of the many things you can do is to encourage your team to go paperless. If it is possible not to print out a file and use an electronic one instead, by all means do so. However, if the need is really urgent, why not use notepads that come from recycled paper? With increased demand for recycled products, industries would be more compelled to recycle.

For World Environment Day, why not organize a company-wide tree-planting activity instead of the usual golf tournament or beach outing? It's a good, not to mention eco-friendly, way to bond. Order some organic T-shirts and have them imprinted with your corporate logo to make everyone feel part of the team.

Another activity for World Environment Day you can do is designate one day a week as “Bike to Work Day.” Aside from being a good way to exercise, biking minimizes your carbon footprint. Make sure everyone in the team has a sports bottle to avoid dehydration.

Department stores and shops can also take part in World Environment Day by starting a campaign to choose reusable nonwoven or cloth shopping bags over plastic and paper utility bags. They can also offer discounts or points to customers who bring their reusable bags when they shop. Banners are a good way to announce to all that your company is one with the rest of the world in implementing earth-friendly corporate practices.
